Reform Party at crossroads as conservative realignment looms

Korea's conservative political landscape is facing an uncertain future as the Reform Party grapples with a critical choice. The party is contemplating whether to persist as an independent force or ally itself with the primary opposition party, the People Power Party (PPP). The Reform Party's struggles have been exacerbated by its disappointing performance in the June local elections and the recent resignation of its leader, Rep. Lee Jun-seok.

These setbacks have sparked concerns about the party's ability to maintain its independence as a viable political entity.

Central to this debate are the career trajectories of two influential Reform Party members, Rep. Han Dong-hoon, a 41-year-old independent lawmaker, and Han Dong-hoon. Both figures are currently operating outside the PPP and could play pivotal roles in determining the direction of Korea's conservative politics. Experts suggest that a merger between the Reform Party and the PPP remains improbable in the near term.

However, questions persist about the party's capacity to survive and participate in the 2028 general election on its own.

Political analysts point out that the Reform Party differs from smaller, more narrowly focused parties. While it has attempted to present itself as a mainstream political force, it has encountered significant challenges in broadening its appeal and gaining widespread support. Kim Jin-wook, a professor at Shinhan University, emphasizes the Reform Party's inability to establish a strong, dedicated base of supporters, setting it apart from more ideologically driven political groups.
