Rain threat puts India’s WTC hopes under pressure in Sri Lanka Test

India's second Test match against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka is under pressure due to rain, which could impact India's World T20 Qualifier (WTC) campaign. Sri Lanka, batting first, finished their second innings at 218 for 6, with Sonal Dinusha and Keshara Nuwantha still at the crease. The hosts, led by Pasindu Sooriyabandara and Kamindu Mendis, mounted a spirited comeback, raising the possibility of a draw if further rain disrupts the final day.

A draw for India would drop them to fifth place in the WTC standings, with a points percentage of 51.52, while a victory would elevate them to fourth place, following Bangladesh's heavy loss to Australia. The critical concern for India is the diminishing margin for error in the remaining seven Tests, including a two-Test tour of New Zealand and a five-Test home series against Australia next year. India has already lost four of their 10 Tests in the current cycle, and they can afford very few more setbacks.

To secure a spot in the WTC final, India would need to win seven out of their remaining eight Tests, including this match. However, finishing with six wins and two defeats would yield a points percentage of 62.96, a figure that may not be sufficient based on recent qualification trends. The last two cycles have shown that the four teams reaching the WTC final had a points percentage above 65, with India's 58.8% in the 2023 cycle being the exception. Both finalists in 2025 finished above 67%.

India's recent strong performances, with Manav Suthar and Saransh Jain regularly striking in the final session, provide a glimmer of hope. However, given the rain interruptions and the ongoing fight between Sri Lanka and India, a decisive result is crucial not only for the series but also for India's narrow road to the WTC final.
