PKR needs fresh faces, not a Tian Chua comeback, says analyst

Political analyst Azmi Hassan has voiced his opinion that former Batu MP Tian Chua should concentrate on working behind the scenes to bolster the PKR party, rather than contesting another seat for Parliament. The University of Tasmania academic pointed out that veteran Reformasi-era politicians like Tian Chua hold a vital role in revitalizing the party's prospects leading up to the 16th general election.

However, Azmi cautioned that Tian Chua's attempt to run again under PKR could potentially spark internal discord within the party.

According to Azmi, the PKR organization should instead groom a new generation of leaders as candidates for the forthcoming general election. While acknowledging the value of Tian Chua's experience, Azmi stressed that his candidacy is not a prerequisite for the party's success. Tian Chua had recently stated that Batu's constituents were in favor of his return, but the ultimate decision lies with the party leadership.

Tian Chua, who served two consecutive terms in Batu from 2008, was disqualified from defending his seat in the 2018 general election after a returning officer rejected his nomination due to a RM2,000 fine imposed for insulting a police officer's modesty. Following the rejection, Tian Chua endorsed independent candidate P Prabakaran, who went on to win the seat and later joined PKR.

Tian Chua was subsequently dismissed from the party in January 2023 after challenging Prabakaran as an independent candidate in the previous year's general election, which pitted him against the party's own candidate.

Academic James Chin, in his analysis, suggested that Tian Chua's impact on Parliament would be limited unless he is part of a broader group of four or five MPs. He questioned whether Tian Chua could overtake Prabakaran and argued that the latter had amassed substantial groundwork over the past few years. Chin proposed that Tian Chua's only feasible comeback would be if PKR's top leadership urged Prabakaran to relinquish his position.

Chin noted that Tian Chua's chances of regaining his seat would hinge on the party machinery's support, as his individual popularity is not enough. He also highlighted that Tian Chua's decision to stay away from another party while in the wilderness is a positive aspect. However, Chin questioned whether Tian Chua's experience would give him an edge in the contemporary political environment.

He believed that while Tian Chua is highly experienced in grassroots work, he is not more experienced than many other individuals. Chin pointed out that the political landscape has significantly evolved since Tian Chua's departure from Parliament.
