Parliament approves nominations of Mahama Ayariga and Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings

Minister-designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, has expressed his backing for the notion of a National Cathedral, but has criticized the manner in which the project has been carried out. During a hearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Thursday, August 27, Mr Ayariga made his remarks.

He stated that the proposal to create a national place of worship for Ghana’s Christian community was not without merit, especially considering the country’s deep religious roots. Admitting that although Ghana is a secular state, religion still plays a significant role in the lives of many citizens, Mr Ayariga maintained that the idea itself was a good one, but its implementation had fallen short.

Concerning the choice of location for the project, Mr Ayariga raised concerns, indicating that certain aspects of its execution required reevaluation. However, he emphasized that if Parliament endorses his nomination, he would consult leaders of the Christian community to determine if there is still an interest in completing the project.

Furthermore, any decision to revive the project would necessitate discussions with President John Dramani Mahama. "If they still want to have it, I will engage with the President and, if it is his wish, I will mobilise funds for its construction," he assured the Committee. Mr Ayariga's comments indicate that while he endorses the overarching vision behind the National Cathedral, he believes the project's execution and other crucial factors must be thoroughly reviewed before any final decision on its completion is made.
