US missile interceptor shortfall 'beyond critical' due to war on Iran: Report

The United States faces a critical shortage of advanced missile interceptors due to its ongoing war on Iran, according to a recent report. The shortage, particularly of Patriot missiles, has left the US military in Europe without enough systems to defend against a sustained ballistic missile attack, as reported by both a NATO official and a US official to the Associated Press (AP). The US military would have very limited capability to defend against a single ballistic missile strike, according to the US official.

The conflict between the US and Iran started on February 28 when the US and Israel launched military strikes against Iran. Despite a ceasefire brokered through a June memorandum of understanding, hostilities have continued throughout the summer. Iran responded to the attack by launching drones and missiles at Gulf states.

In response to the conflict, the US pulled some air defense systems and troops from East Asia. However, the report raises concerns about the vulnerability of European states to a potential Russian attack. The CIA Director, John Ratcliffe, traveled to Moscow to warn Russian President Vladimir Putin against a possible attack on NATO members.

Ukraine, which is fighting a Russian invasion, has utilized US-supplied ATACMS medium-range ballistic missiles to target Russia. These missiles are designed to strike behind enemy lines. The US military is experiencing a shortage of these missiles in Ukraine as well, according to the AP report.
