Moldova, Ukraine and Romania must strengthen cooperation to protect their airspace – Sandu

On Moldova’s 35th Independence Day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Moldovan President Maia Sandu and Romanian President Nicușor Dan gathered in Chisinau for a trilateral meeting focused on regional security, cooperation and resistance to Russian aggression, according to UATV English. Zelenskyy emphasized that countries bordering Russia must collaborate closely with one another and other free nations to bolster regional security.

He pointed out that Ukraine has faced 11 air raid alerts and 11 Russian attacks involving ballistic missiles and drones within the last 24 hours, underscoring the necessity for neighboring countries to assist each other in formulating an effective response. Sandu highlighted that Moldova's security is intrinsically linked to the resilience of its neighboring countries and stressed the importance of cooperation with Ukraine.

She remarked that Moldova can enjoy peace today due to the resilience of its neighbors and stated that Moldova aims to become a security partner for Ukraine, warning that repeated violations of Moldovan and Romanian airspace by aggressive neighbors would not deter the two nations. Sandu also reflected on the significance of Moldova's independence, emphasizing that it entails having control over one's own country, garnering respect, engaging in free trade and choosing one's allies and course.

Romanian President Nicușor Dan, for his part, noted that Ukraine, Moldova and Romania have matured to the point where they comprehend the challenges affecting the security and stability of the entire region. He stated that cooperation is essential to prevent aggression. Throughout the visit, Sandu bestowed upon Zelenskyy Moldova's highest state honor—the Order of the Republic—acknowledging his role in safeguarding peace and freedom in Europe and expressing gratitude to the Ukrainian people for their resistance. Sandu also remarked, "While Ukraine is fighting there, in the east, Moldova can sleep peacefully."
