Ukraine, Romania to resume minority rights commission meetings after nearly eight-year break

Romania and Ukraine are set to resume their minority rights commission meetings, following an eight-year hiatus, announced Romanian President Nicușor Dan during a trilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Moldovan President Maia Sandu in Chișinău. Dan noted that the process is moving forward, stating that the commission will once again meet and discuss crucial matters, particularly focusing on education in the national languages of both countries.

The last full meeting of the commission took place on December 10-11, 2018, in Bucharest. In September 2020, the foreign ministers of Romania and Ukraine agreed to continue and strengthen the work of this bilateral body. However, no further official full-format meetings have occurred since then. Instead, discussions on language and educational rights of national minorities have been held through direct intergovernmental consultations and cooperation between relevant ministries.
