Microsoft slaps a fresh coat of AI paint on the Microsoft 365 Roadmap

Microsoft has decided to give the Microsoft 365 Roadmap a fresh makeover by incorporating AI into its identity. From now on, the list of anticipated improvements will be known as the AI at Work roadmap. This change is announced in the Microsoft 365 admin center with a message explaining the transition.

Microsoft explains that the shift is prompted by how its customers work in practice. The decision also alters when information about roadmap items appears. Instead of the current twice-yearly release wave 1 and 2 model, Microsoft plans to release new features and capabilities as soon as they are finalized. This should provide administrators with more advanced notice of forthcoming enhancements.

The renaming and reorganization will take time. The existing roadmap content will gradually move to the AI at Work roadmap. This transition is expected to be completed by November 15, 2026. Currently, any roadmap items in public preview or with a General Availability date of June 1, 2026, or later, will also be included in the AI at Work roadmap.

Interestingly, this move has sparked some debate. An independent Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) has created the Microsoft Rebrand Registry to track such changes. While some may view this as an attempt to push AI in administrators' faces, Microsoft maintains that the decision is driven by a desire to better serve its customers.

Despite this, Microsoft insists that claims in a recent lawsuit, which alleges that the company has failed to convert a significant percentage of its Microsoft 365 users to paid Copilot subscriptions, are without merit.
