In the beginning of our series "Mexico and My Money," we decided to start with a topic that affects nearly everyone in Mexico, both tourists and residents alike: tipping. The practice of tipping in Mexico is fraught with complexity and subjectivity, with no definitive rules on how much to tip.

Tipping customs in Mexico have evolved over time. In the past, when all meals were paid in cash, customers simply rounded up their bill. However, as paying with credit cards became more common, tipping expectations shifted. During the COVID-19 pandemic, tipping became a way to show appreciation for the risks taken by essential workers, which led to higher baseline tipping expectations.

When it comes to tipping in Mexican restaurants, opinions vary. Most foreigners tip between 10% and 20%, with 15% being the most common amount. Mexicans themselves typically tip 10%, with 15% reserved for exceptional service at fine dining establishments.

Tipping practices differ regionally. Foreigners who tip 20% or more in restaurants may face frustration from Mexicans who view such tips as excessive and contributing to inflation. Workers in popular tourist destinations like Los Cabos or Puerto Vallarta have higher tip expectations than those in other parts of Mexico.

To put things into perspective, Mexican waiters earn a relatively low average monthly base salary of 6,040 pesos (about US $357) in the first quarter of 2026. They rely heavily on tips to make ends meet, and their income can be inconsistent and unpredictable. In fine dining spots and popular venues catering to wealthy Mexicans, tips can range from 12,000 to 50,000 pesos (US $710 to US $2,959) per month.
