Lake Ontario renamed Lake America in new Trump order

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America, effective immediately. This move follows the collapse of trade talks between the US and Canada, and the US imposing 50% tariffs on $20bn worth of Canadian goods. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney noted that the name Lake Ontario has been used for over 400 years, well before the formation of the Canadian Confederation and the US Declaration of Independence.

Canadian officials have dismissed the idea, stating that they will continue to call the lake by its traditional name. The US has previously changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, leading to a legal dispute and Google Maps reflecting both names.
