Video: Trump signs order to re-name Lake Ontario as Lake America

In a provocative move during the ongoing trade war with Canada, President Donald Trump has ordered the renaming of Lake Ontario to Lake America, according to recent reports. This follows Trump's repeated threats on social media in recent days. Speaking at the Oval Office, Trump expressed frustration over Canada's unfair trade practices, stating that Canada has been ripping off America for a long time.

He also criticized the lack of reciprocal benefits from the US to Canada, highlighting the ongoing military defense of Canada without any tangible returns. The president's determination to punish Canada is evident in his decision to impose tariffs on Canadian imports, up to 50%, in response to Canada's rejection of a trade deal perceived as one-sided by Canada.

Canada has retaliated by imposing reciprocal tariffs on US products. Analysts warn that this escalating trade war could be detrimental to both nations. The name change will be implemented within 30 days in the Geographic Names Information System, the official US database of place names, and will also require updates in government maps, contracts, and other documents.

Canada, however, insists on maintaining its own place-names database and will not recognize the US order. Prime Minister Mark Carney pointed out that the name "Lake Ontario" originates from an Indigenous word meaning 'beautiful lake' and has existed long before both Canada and the US. Canada maintains that the naming should remain consistent with historical references.

The lake, along with four others, forms the Great Lakes of North America, with Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, and Lake Erie being the other constituents.
