Hydel plant in Nepal feeding power to India among several units hit by flash floods

A flash flood in Nepal on Wednesday caused damage to several power plants that supply electricity to India. According to a senior Indian government official, Nepal reduced its power supply to India from around 800 megawatts to at least 400 megawatts. The 14-MW Devighat hydropower plant, which provides power to India, was among those affected by the floods.

India imports electricity from multiple hydroelectric power plants in Nepal, with a peak of 963.4 MW imported from Nepal on August 26 when the flash flood struck. Other hydroelectric plants Chilime and Trisuli, supplying electricity to Bangladesh, were also affected. The Nepal Energy Ministry reported that 13 hydroelectric power plants and a solar plant were impacted by the floods, affecting around 359 MW of capacity. The death toll from the flash floods rose to 359 on Thursday.
