Indonesia expresses condolences over Nepal-China border flash floods

On Wednesday, a catastrophic event near the Nepal-China border left experts baffled by its origins and the extent of the devastation. The floods triggered by the collapse of a massive rock-ice avalanche left little time for authorities to confirm the cause of the disaster. The Nepal Foreign Minister, Shisir Khanal, reported that an earthquake struck at 8:37 a.m. local time, followed by a flash flood just three minutes later.

However, further investigation revealed that a significant rock-ice avalanche in Nepal blocked the Lhende river, leading to the floods downstream. Initially, experts suspected tectonic activity due to the area's vulnerability to seismic shifts, but later analysis from the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) concluded that glacial instability, often exacerbated by climate change, was the primary culprit.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) later revised its statement, confirming that the seismic event was due to a glacial collapse and debris flow, rather than an earthquake, and that no earthquake had occurred. This unusual disaster has raised troubling questions about what triggered the earthquake-like seismic signals, which misled early detection systems and officials.

As the true causes of the disaster unfold, the scientific community is grappling with the broader implications, emphasizing the need for a formal cross-border mechanism for sharing real-time information on potential glacial lake outburst floods.
