Drugs, abortion pills found in Gauteng school raids

In recent raids conducted by police in Gauteng, drugs, abortion pills, and other illegal items were discovered at multiple schools. Education MEC Lebogang Maile has stepped up safety operations across the province following these findings. The searches, which took place on Wednesday, targeted 17 schools and uncovered nyaope, abortion pills, and a significant amount of dagga.

One alarming case involved a female student found in possession of a substantial quantity of dagga, raising suspicions that it might have been intended for distribution. Another incident involved a pupil carrying small packets of dagga who admitted to being recruited by a local drug dealer to sell the drug. These discoveries have alarmed provincial authorities, who warn that criminal networks are increasingly targeting vulnerable students.

Maile emphasized that schools cannot tackle these issues alone and urged a collective effort from parents, communities, law enforcement, and government to protect children and ensure safe learning environments. The Gauteng Education Department stated that the ongoing searches are part of a broader strategy to improve school safety and prevent the entry of dangerous substances and weapons.
