Days before Mohan Bhagwat’s New York event, X suspends host AHEAD’s account

Days prior to Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat's New York speech, X has suspended the American Hindus for Engagement and Dialogue (AHEAD Forum) account, which is managing the August 29 event, according to ANI. The AHEAD Forum is hosting the "Universal Oneness Celebration" at the Infosys Theater at Madison Square Garden, where Bhagwat will speak.

AHEAD has not disclosed the suspension reason. The forum's organizers claim over 200 Hindu-American organizations support the multicultural and interfaith celebration. They argue their communications align with X's policies, promoting universal peace, oneness, harmony, and constructive dialogue across communities.

The suspension coincides with escalating controversy surrounding the event. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and critics opposing Bhagwat and the RSS have voiced their disapproval. However, no evidence links the suspension to this controversy.

Mamdani, at a press conference after Bhagwat's arrival, stated he opposes the rally but is unclear if the city can cancel a private event. He also urged Mayor Mamdani to ensure the safety and civil rights of attendees. Meanwhile, the Hindu American Foundation issued a security advisory, urging vigilance and civil interactions.

Opponents of Bhagwat and the RSS have announced protests outside Madison Square Garden, accusing the organization of promoting an exclusionary Hindu nationalist agenda. However, the RSS denies these claims and describes the program as inclusive, aiming to foster dialogue and mutual respect.

The US Commission on International Religious Freedom has called for targeted sanctions against RSS members, while the Ministry of External Affairs dismissed their allegations as biased and uncredible. Despite the controversy, US singer Mary Millben has backed the event, criticizing opposition motivated by hostility towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP.
