Ruto: Constitutional rights must become lived realities

President William Ruto emphasized that the true measure of Kenya's Constitution is the well-being of its citizens, not merely how often its provisions are referenced. During Katiba Day celebrations, marking the 16th anniversary of the 2010 Constitution, Ruto stressed that the Constitution must translate into improved living conditions for Kenyans.

He highlighted Article 43, which guarantees essential socio-economic rights such as healthcare, housing, food, water, social security, and education, as vital to evaluating the Constitution's implementation. These rights are not mere additions but fundamental entitlements, according to Ruto. He argued that the Constitution's success can be gauged by whether a mother has access to healthcare, an urgent patient receives treatment without financial burden, families have access to clean water, and children receive education.

Ruto acknowledged that his administration has made strides in these areas, citing over 32.4 million Kenyans registered with the Social Health Authority, providing treatment to more than eight million, and the recruitment of over 100,000 teachers. However, he stressed that this progress is ongoing, with significant work still ahead.

Despite this, Ruto affirmed that the promise of the Constitution is gradually becoming a reality for more Kenyans compared to previous times.
