Overcoming the challenge of getting the paraborgs into the right position has been crucial in this research. To prepare the insects for the task, they are first anesthetized while electrodes and microchips are fitted. Once the harnesses are removed, the cockroaches' lifespans are comparable to those of regular cockroaches. Cockroaches have been used for various purposes in the past, including search and explore missions, pipeline inspections, underwater exploration, and even military reconnaissance.
The ultimate goal is to deploy swarms of specialized cyborg insects, each performing a specific role, with the hope of transitioning from the research phase to real-world rescues within the next five to ten years.
