US visa appointments paused globally as Trump tightens immigration rules

During President Donald Trump's second term, the US has taken a significant step to tighten its immigration rules by pausing visa appointments worldwide. A spokesperson for the US State Department revealed that a global training program has been initiated across all US embassies and consulates, with visa appointments being adjusted to incorporate this training.

However, the duration of this training is not disclosed by the department. The initiative aims to enhance the ability of consular officers to screen applicants consistently and identify those who may become reliant on US public benefits.

This pause in visa appointments is part of a broader crackdown on immigration undertaken by the Trump administration. Recent actions have included cancellations of up to 2 lakh visas and increased fees for H-1B visas, which can reach over $100,000. The administration has also been rejecting applications based on various grounds, such as political opinions and participation in protests supporting Palestine. Trump claims these measures are intended to bolster domestic security.

However, the Trump administration's immigration policies are not without legal challenges. On Friday, a US judge ruled that a policy suspending immigrant visa issuance for applicants from 75 countries exceeded the authority of Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The judge determined that the measure was too broad and beyond the scope of the Secretary's statutory powers.

The affected countries include Brazil, Colombia, Uruguay, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and several nations in Africa, the Middle East, and the Caribbean. The department had expressed concerns about applicants from these countries potentially becoming reliant on public resources.

Applicants scheduled for visa interviews have been notified that their appointments are being rescheduled, with new dates to be communicated at a later time. The length of the current visa appointment pause remains unspecified.
