US pauses all immigrant visa appointments globally amid H-1B row, crackdown: Report

The Trump administration has halted visa appointments worldwide as part of an ongoing immigration crackdown. A US State Department spokesperson announced on Tuesday that the decision was made in response to a global training initiative implemented at all US embassies and consulates. The training aims to equip consular officers with the skills necessary to identify applicants who may become reliant on US public benefits, as well as to ensure a consistent and comprehensive evaluation of visa applicants.

However, the State Department did not provide further details regarding the specifics of the training or its timeline.

President Trump has been pursuing a stringent deportation campaign and immigration crackdown, including revoking visas and green cards and rejecting applications based on various grounds, such as political opinions and protests against Israel's actions in Gaza. While the administration claims these measures are aimed at enhancing domestic security, they have encountered legal challenges.

A recent ruling by a US judge struck down a policy that suspended the issuance of immigrant visas to applicants from 75 countries, stating that the policy exceeded the statutory authority of Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The visa appointment pause was first reported by the Financial Times, which stated that immigrant visa applicants with scheduled interviews at US embassies and consulates have received notifications of rescheduled appointments, and they will be informed of new dates in the future. Human rights groups have strongly condemned Trump's immigration crackdown, labeling it as discriminatory and in violation of free speech and due process rights.

They also argue that the crackdown has created an unsafe environment in the US, particularly for ethnic minorities who have expressed concerns about racial profiling.

Despite his campaign promises in 2024 to curb illegal immigration, Trump's administration has simultaneously made legal immigration more challenging. For instance, it has introduced new and expensive fees for applicants of certain work visas, exacerbating the difficulties faced by those seeking to legally enter the country.
