Trump raises prospect of demolishing iconic Kennedy Center

The Kennedy Center, a renowned Washington landmark, could face demolition if legal challenges to President Donald Trump's renovation plans persist, according to the Trump administration. In a Justice Department filing, attorneys argued that without Trump's restoration efforts, the venue would deteriorate into an unsafe structure requiring demolition.

The filing suggested that if courts block the renovation, the center could be torn down and replaced with an outdoor amphitheatre overlooking the Potomac River. While admitting this would not honor President John F. Kennedy, the administration contended that this alternative would be less costly to maintain. The administration emphasized Trump's role in securing $258 million in funding for restoration and attracting new donors, asserting that his name is crucial to retaining current supporters.

The center's board recently approved signage recognizing Trump's restoration efforts. However, Congresswoman Joyce Beatty, an ex officio member on the board, has challenged Trump's actions, arguing that only Congress can name the institution, which is established as a living memorial to Kennedy. A federal judge previously ordered the removal of Trump's signage.

The administration is appealing the ruling. Kennedy Center officials have described the renovation plans as repairs to electrical, stage, and leak-prevention systems without altering the exterior or reducing the building to its structural frame. A hearing on the proposed closure and Trump's recognition is scheduled for Thursday.
