Penang schools told to stay on alert as haze worsens

GEORGE TOWN, Aug 26 — The Penang Education Department has instructed all schools and education officials across the state to remain vigilant and prepared for the adverse effects of worsening air quality due to haze conditions. The department is continuously monitoring the Air Pollutant Index (API) levels in different parts of Penang and instructing schools to keep a close watch on these readings.

When the API exceeds 100, all outdoor activities should be halted. Schools are required to close immediately if the API reading surpasses 200. Should the API reading go above 500, teachers and implementing group members are exempt from reporting to school, provided the relevant regulations apply.

In addition to these measures, schools are urged to ensure ample water supplies, encourage students to drink enough water to stay hydrated, and minimize exposure to outdoor air where possible. Special care should be taken for students with pre-existing health issues or those displaying signs of illness. The use of face masks among students and staff is also recommended where appropriate.

The directive applies to 29 areas nationwide that have reported unhealthy API readings as of 2 pm today, according to the Department of Environment. These areas include Minden, Seberang Perai, and Balik Pulau. Schools are required to report any developments and the steps they take to the Penang Education Department and the Education Department, which will aid in monitoring and coordinating actions at the state level.
