Penang schools told to stay on alert as haze worsens

GEORGE TOWN, Aug 26 — The Penang Education Department (JPNPP) has instructed all District Education Offices (PPD) and schools in the state to be prepared for the well-being of students and staff amidst worsening haze. JPNPP is keeping a close eye on API readings throughout Penang, while schools are advised to stay vigilant and monitor the readings themselves.

When the API reading surpasses 100, all outdoor activities must be halted, and schools should close immediately once it exceeds 200. A reading of 500 or higher warrants teachers and implementing group members not to report to school, according to the department. The JPNPP also emphasized the need for adequate drinking water supplies, urging students to drink enough and minimize exposure to outdoor air.

Special care should be taken for students with existing health issues or those experiencing illness symptoms, and the use of face masks among students and school staff is suggested where appropriate. Schools are required to report any developments and actions taken to the PPD and JPNPP for statewide monitoring and coordination. Among the 29 areas nationwide with unhealthy API readings as of 2 pm today were Minden, Seberang Perai, and Balik Pulau, as reported by the Department of Environment (DOE).
