Trump fights to keep name on Kennedy Center, warning demolition if renovations don't continue

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C. is at risk of demolition unless courts permit President Donald Trump to have his name added to the building's exterior, according to White House officials, as reported by NBC News on August 26. In court filings, the U.S. Justice Department labeled the Kennedy Center as "structurally unsound, fundamentally unsafe, and embarrassing to the Nation's Capital," emphasizing the center's board of trustees—comprised entirely of individuals chosen by Trump—is convinced that the president's support is their only means of ensuring financial stability and revitalization.

If Trump's directives are not implemented, the center is expected to continue its decline, becoming a hazardous, deteriorating structure that would necessitate demolition, according to Justice Department official Brantley T. Myers. On May 30, a federal district court in the District of Columbia prohibited the Trump administration from renaming the center, asserting that only Congress holds the power to alter its name.

On June 14, a Washington federal appeals court refused to halt the removal of Trump's name from the building's facade. Later, on July 8, the same court ruled that Trump's name should not be included in the name of the Kennedy Center in Washington while it examines his appeal of the ruling reinstating the center's original name.
