On Tuesday, the US State Department announced a pause on visa appointments worldwide amid an ongoing immigration crackdown by President Donald Trump's administration in his second term. The global training initiative launched at all US embassies and consulates aims to adjust visa service appointments to accommodate the training.

Trump's administration has pursued a stringent deportation drive and immigration crackdown, revoking visas and green cards and rejecting applications based on various grounds, including political opinions and protests against Israel's war with Hamas. Trump claims the crackdown aims to bolster domestic security, but it has faced legal challenges.

A US judge recently ruled against a policy suspending immigrant visa issuance to 75 countries, deeming it beyond the Secretary of State's authority. Human rights groups have strongly condemned Trump's immigration approach as discriminatory and in violation of free speech and due process rights, alleging it creates an unsafe environment in the US, particularly for ethnic minorities who fear racial profiling.

Despite Trump's 2024 campaign promises to curb illegal immigration, his administration has also made legal immigration more burdensome by imposing new and costly fees for certain work visa applicants.
