TrafficTech cameras to target motorists speeding above 50km/h in school zones — Police

The Ghana Police Service has announced plans to use TrafficTech cameras and other advanced technologies to monitor motorists speeding in school zones and densely populated areas. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Alexander Kwaku Obeng explained that the initiative aims to tackle dangerous driving practices that contribute to fatal road crashes.

The system will specifically target offences such as exceeding speed limits by more than 50km/h in school zones and built-up areas with heavy traffic. Obeng revealed this on JoyFM's Super Morning Show, adding that the technology would also monitor speeding on highways and major roads where some drivers disregard speed limits, putting other road users at risk.

According to ACP Obeng, the necessary hardware, including cameras and handheld devices, has been procured and is currently undergoing testing. The software and back-office infrastructure required for the system's operation are also ready. He stated that the Ministry of Transport, along with agencies within the road safety management sector, will oversee the certification process before the system is fully implemented.

Evidence collected through the devices will enable the police to take legal action against vehicle owners and drivers who violate speed limits. This includes issuing court notices to those found guilty of exceeding the prescribed speed limits in dangerous areas.
