Thomas Castellanos reportedly signs late with Texas Tech as Red Raiders get their Brendan Sorsby replacement

Quarterback Thomas Castellanos has committed to Texas Tech, according to On3. The decision comes after Castellanos spent the previous season at Florida State. Texas Tech has been without a clear answer at the quarterback position since former QB Brendan Sorsby left the team amid a gambling investigation. Initially suspended for two games, Sorsby faced further fallout as the Big 12 threatened to refuse playing Texas Tech if he remained the starter.

The situation escalated when the Texas attorney general and the Big 12 sought legal action against the program, turning the offseason into a chaotic mess. With Sorsby gone, the Red Raiders were set to start freshman Will Hammond, who had won the job during fall camp. However, Castellanos' late signing has raised questions about whether he or Hammond will earn the starting role as the No. 12 Red Raiders open their season at home on September 5 against Abilene Christian.

Castellanos, a dual-threat quarterback, played in 12 games for Florida State in 2025, throwing for 2,760 yards, 15 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. Hammond, who has been with Texas Tech for two years as a backup, has seen limited action, completing 166 passes for 166 yards and seven touchdowns last season.
