The character of Garfield's role was initially referred to as "Ploughman," described as a legendary leader of a revolt against King Richard II. However, confusion arose when social media accounts for "The Uprising" posted a clip with a tagline reading "Witness the Rise of Robin Hood."

This led to speculation that the film might be a contemporary take on Robin Hood, following the release of "The Death of Robin Hood" starring Hugh Jackman in June. Focus Features' website only listed the film as "The Uprising" with the tagline "Rise or die," emphasizing the true events of the revolt. Dolby, the poster distributor, still displayed the "Witness the Rise of Robin Hood" line, adding to the confusion.

Entertainment Film Distributors, releasing the film in the U.K., denied any connection to Robin Hood, stating it is a historical epic about the Peasants' Revolt of 1381. The mixed messaging surrounding the film's marketing and plot has left audiences uncertain whether it is about historical figure Wat Tyler, fictional Robin Hood, or a combination.
