Dolly Parton didn't merely sing about her beloved Tennessee mountain home, the Great Smoky Mountains. Instead, she devoted her life to elevating this often-overlooked region, using her music to draw attention to what had inspired her for years. Consequently, her death has profoundly affected rural Sevier County. For the world, Parton was an internationally renowned country music star, but to her neighbors, she was Tennessee's favorite daughter.

When Parton passed away, townsfolk flocked to a bronze statue of the singer in her hometown of Sevierville, exchanging stories and paying their respects. The town, nestled in the Smoky Mountains just a few minutes from Dollywood, was adorned with tributes from those who mourned the loss of the beloved artist.

Born to one of 12 children, Parton grew up in a two-room cabin with no electricity or running water. Despite these humble beginnings, she described life in East Tennessee as "peaceful as a baby's sigh," a place where "crickets sing in the fields nearby." She moved to Nashville shortly after high school, but she once joked that she may be the "only person that ever left the Smoky Mountains and took them with her."

Parton's strategic decision to co-own the amusement park Dollywood in Pigeon Forge in 1986 further transformed the region. The park quickly became Tennessee's most visited tourist attraction, generating $1.8 billion annually and employing the county's largest workforce. Sevierville Chamber of Commerce member Amanda Marr stated that Dollywood's presence helped take the county's tourism to the next level by drawing even more visitors to the area.
