Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy review – a competent action game spinoff that loses what made its predecessors unique

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy aims to distance itself from the main series in order to showcase the unique story that the Plague Tale franchise can offer. The game does not feature the main protagonists, Amicia and Hugo, and takes place 16 years before the events of the last game. The story focuses on Sophia, who will later become the woman who saves Amicia in A Plague Tale: Requiem.

Sophia's journey begins with her being kidnapped by the Inquisition as a child and injected with a poison that gives her visions of a mysterious island. Her father, who was the leader of a group of smugglers, found the island and died while searching for treasure and a cure to Sophia's dreams. After her father's death, Faro, her father's successor, continues to visit the island in search of its secrets.

As Sophia grows into a teenage girl, she becomes increasingly frustrated with Faro, who never takes her with him to the island despite the growing casualties in the expeditions. Guilt-ridden, Sophia stops sharing her visions with her father. These early chapters of Resonance introduce its main focus: combat.
