Presidency blames contractors for failure of Benin-Agbor-Asaba Expressway

The Presidency has held contractors responsible for the subpar condition of the Benin-Agbor-Asaba Expressway, where motorists have been trapped for several days. Sunday Dare, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communications, attributed the road's poor state to the contractors overseeing the ongoing repairs.

The Federal Government swiftly reacted to the public's discontent by sending key stakeholders to the affected area and demanding immediate action from the contractor. Dare emphasized that this incident should not be used to evaluate the overall state of road projects nationwide, stating that numerous other federal roads have been completed or are progressing without encountering similar issues.

The spokesman for the president also clarified that the government's duty is to identify roads in need of repairs and provide funding, while the contractors are accountable for executing the projects correctly. Dare further explained that such occurrences are relatively rare, and inevitable challenges like these are commonly faced during rainy seasons.

On Wednesday, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, visited the problematic Benin-Agbor-Asaba road in Edo State, expressing regret over its present state to the commuters.
