Precinct 20 sites in Putrajaya designated for non-Muslim places of worship, says national unity minister

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 26 — National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang has announced that Precinct 20 in Putrajaya will be designated for non-Muslim places of worship from 2013. This initiative, according to the minister, not only embodies systematic and inclusive urban planning but also ensures suitable spaces for various faith communities to practice their religions in a peaceful and harmonious manner.

This approach aligns with the principles of Policy 17 — Putrajaya Towards an Inclusive Compassionate Community — of the Putrajaya Structure Plan 2050, which focuses on creating an inclusive and mutually respectful community.

The minister's statement came after a meeting with the Prince of Peace Church, a recently established church located in Precinct 20. Aaron and Hannah Yeoh, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories), discussed the potential of Precinct 20 to evolve into an interfaith hub. This hub would bring together diverse faith communities through worship spaces, interaction zones, and dialogue platforms, thereby enhancing mutual understanding, harmony, and unity among Malaysians.

In addition to the Prince of Peace Church, Precinct 20 is also home to the Dhammaduta Malaysia Buddhist Centre, operating since 2023. The development of Gurdwara Sahib Putrajaya, Dewi Sri Lalithaambigai Alayam, and San Qing Taoist Temple is also underway. Plans are also in place for the construction of a Roman Catholic church in the area.
