Philippines eyes $500m bilateral trade with Pakistan

The Philippines aims to elevate bilateral trade with Pakistan to a substantial $500 million, according to Dr. Emmanuel R. Fernandez, the ambassador of the Philippines to Pakistan. Presently, the trade between the two nations stands at around $197 million, a figure that lags far behind their immense trade potential. Fernandez met with a delegation led by Sadat Hussain Shah, Chairman of the Al-Sadat Group, who emphasized the importance of expanding tourism cooperation.

Shah proposed highlighting the countries' shared cultural heritage, natural beauty, and tourism potential, alongside exploring joint ventures in the hospitality industry.

The Philippines, being the second-largest market in ASEAN, could serve as a crucial gateway for Pakistan to the region. Approximately 5,000 Pakistanis annually visit the Philippines for tourism, while a substantial number of Filipinos also travel to Pakistan, especially to its scenic northern regions. To facilitate Pakistani travelers, the Philippines Embassy in Islamabad has been taking steps to simplify the visa process and issue more visas.

Both sides agreed to explore opportunities for greater cooperation in tourism and other areas of mutual interest.

Potential joint initiatives and the exchange of experiences in the tourism sector were discussed during the meeting. There is also a possibility of establishing direct air connectivity between Pakistan and the Philippines, as direct flights would play a vital role in promoting tourism, business, and people-to-people contacts. With over 7,600 islands offering diverse tourism opportunities, the Philippines boasts a rich culture, society, and natural attractions, making it an appealing destination for Pakistani tourists.

Simultaneously, Pakistan's northern areas possess considerable potential for attracting Filipino visitors.
