Muthuraman Palaniappan, a Mechanical Engineering student with a First Class Honors degree from Taylor's University, demonstrated his ability to quickly understand clinical problems, identify limitations, develop prototypes, test, and present results during the MIT Hacking Medicine Boston GrandHack. Collaborating with clinicians, researchers, and engineers from around the world, he worked on developing a low-cost health monitoring device for early detection of compartment syndrome, which is currently in the patent process.

Muthuraman, who developed an interest in mechanical engineering at the age of 12, chose to pursue this field due to its commitment and ability to have a tangible impact on the physical world.

His work has led him to the Yale Innovation Summit 2026, where three of his health innovation innovations were selected for presentation in the 'Health' track. Notably, one of his team's innovations won the runner-up spot in the 'Health: AI, Data & Clinical Intelligence' competition. Muthuraman continues to contribute to health innovation through collaborations across various disciplines such as endometriosis screening, stroke recovery, and AI-powered medical interpretation.

The hackathon tested participants within a short timeframe, under the pressure of time constraints and direct jury assessment, rather than mere slide presentations. Each competition is an opportunity, according to Muthuraman. Mechanical Engineering reaches the Choo Hui Leng lecture room, guiding students in the Innovation & Prototyping Lab to translate academic learning into practical engineering projects and competitive innovations.

According to Choo Hui Leng, Head of the Mechanical Engineering Diploma Program, Muthuraman's journey not only reflects his curiosity and perseverance but also the applied learning opportunities throughout the program. Learning is not just about conceptual understanding in lecture halls. Students apply it through interdisciplinary projects, competitions, internships, and practical initiatives, similar to the approach at Taylor's University's Centre for Engineering Education.

Established as the first engineering education center in Southeast Asia using the Conceive-Design-Implement-Operate (CDIO) framework, the center guides students to conceive, design, implement, and apply solutions to real-world challenges. This philosophy is evident in initiatives such as Taylor's Racing Team, which allows students to design, build, and test their own concept Formula cars in a real-world project environment.

Beyond engineering design, students also gain experience in pitching, engaging stakeholders, and project management, reflecting professional engineering practice. The Taylor's Racing Team recently competed with their Formula concept car in the SAE Auto Challenge 2026 in Thailand from February 5 to 7. The engineering center is ranked among the top 400 globally in Engineering and Technology, and among the top 450 in Mechanical Engineering in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026.

The program is accredited by the Institution of Engineers Malaysia and the Board of Professional Engineering, ensuring graduates meet professional standards. The center also offers programs in Chemical Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, and Electrical and Electronics Engineering, with opportunities for study abroad at partner universities in the United Kingdom and Australia.
