Penang State Museum draws 47,000 visitors, beats annual target

George Town, Penang saw a record-breaking influx of 47,000 visitors to the Penang State Museum during its inaugural month, surpassing the initial annual goal of 30,000. This marked a significant achievement and demonstrated growing enthusiasm for the state's museums and heritage sites, thus supporting the diversification of tourism beyond popular destinations.

The initial target of 30,000 visitors was surpassed within the first month of the museum's operation. The institution now aims to attract a minimum of 1,500 visitors per month. Visitor feedback collected through QR codes indicated that parking was a significant concern, while others expressed the need for additional content and inquired about the historical figure Francis Light.

Wong Hon Wai, chairman of the State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee, urged visitors to explore Penang's broader network of museums, galleries, and heritage attractions, explaining that some sites are located in different areas. He listed Fort Cornwallis, Guar Kepah in Seberang Prai, and the Macalister Road gallery among the attractions available to explore.

Wong acknowledged that accurately estimating visitor numbers during school holidays and National Day could be challenging due to day trips and travel with friends and relatives. However, ticketed attractions' visitor numbers could be tracked more precisely through recorded entries. The State Museum, Macalister Gallery, and Fort Cornwallis will offer complimentary admission on August 31, presenting an opportunity for visitors to discover Penang's cultural and heritage attractions.

The state has been investing heavily in expanding its museum and gallery network since 2008, restoring heritage buildings and developing new attractions. Wong emphasized the progress made over the past 18 years, including the establishment of the Macalister Gallery branch, Guar Kepah, and Fort Cornwallis. A new branch museum at Macalister Road is set to open in September, offering a distinct concept and selected items from the museum's expanded collection.
