The theme of the event was 'Technology Without Barriers.' The commission has gathered young innovators to develop practical technological solutions, particularly for PwDs and other underserved communities.
Makama noted that the initiative reaffirms the NCC's commitment to fostering innovation, promoting indigenous technological development, and ensuring digital transformation remains inclusive and accessible to all Nigerians. However, she also highlighted that many PwDs and other underserved populations still face barriers in accessing communication services, education, healthcare, financial services, employment opportunities, and government platforms. These challenges necessitate innovative, affordable, and responsive solutions tailored to local realities.
Hellen Obi, Director of the Digital Economy Department at the NCC, explained that the hackathon aims to find homemade solutions that address daily living challenges for PwDs and individuals in rural areas who have been excluded from the digital economy. The 4th edition of the NCC Hackathon Live Show is intended to support local technology development and build functional assistive solutions for universal access.
The core objectives include promoting inclusive digital services, encouraging homegrown entrepreneurship, and bridging the digital divide. Additionally, the hackathon seeks to strengthen the local digital innovation ecosystem by empowering youth with structured venture paths.
Obi highlighted that the hackathon will focus on features such as AI speech-to-text and real-time sign language translations.
