Mara Raises $7M Led by Khosla Ventures and a16z Speedrun to Build Spike, a Counter-Swarm Platform

Startup Mara has secured $7 million in funding from Khosla Ventures to advance its autonomous counter-drone system, Spike. The investment round was led by Khosla Ventures and included participation from a16z Speedrun, Night Capital, Palmdrive, Protagonist, Freedom Fund, and Indicator Fund, among other angel investors. Mara's goal is to combat the growing threat of small, inexpensive first-person-view (FPV) drones on the battlefield and at critical infrastructure sites worldwide.

With the outbreak of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the battlefield has seen a surge in the use of cheap FPV drones that can destroy armored vehicles and disrupt key infrastructure. These drones are also becoming more sophisticated, with some capable of bypassing standard jamming devices. Traditional counter-UAS (C-UAS) systems are designed for larger, high-altitude aircraft and struggle against the swarms of low-altitude FPV drones.

Mara's solution is to use an automated platform called Spike, which consists of a targeting unit (Spotter) and a small interceptor drone (Seeker). Spotter uses visual, acoustic, and radar sensors to locate enemy drones and provides precise coordinates to Seeker, which is launched from a tube and travels at 200 km/h. The Seeker drone's onboard AI can intercept targets if necessary.

Mara claims that Spike creates a distributed network of small, affordable nodes capable of intercepting targets from multiple directions simultaneously. The startup has already demonstrated the effectiveness of Spike in field testing with military partners like the U.S. Army and the Ukrainian armed forces. It has successfully completed intercept trials and has been deployed at a commercial port in South Korea.

Mara's CEO, Daniel Kofman, emphasizes that small UASes have changed the dynamics of warfare by making attacks cheap and easy to execute, and traditional defenses are ineffective. Mara aims to deploy ground-mounted versions of Spike to initial defense customers by the end of the year, followed by vehicle-mounted and portable rucksack configurations in 2027.
