Mitsubishi Pajero to return with all-new model after five-year absence

Mitsubishi is reintroducing the Pajero, an iconic SUV that had been out of production for five years. The fifth-generation Pajero is set to make its global debut on September 2, bringing back a nameplate that had been absent since 2021. While many details remain undisclosed, Mitsubishi has already begun teasing potential features of the revived SUV, such as the return of familiar elements cherished by previous Pajero owners.

First introduced in 1982, the Pajero quickly became one of Mitsubishi's most successful models, with over 3.25 million units sold worldwide. Known for its exceptional off-road capabilities, the Pajero also gained popularity among UAE drivers due to its practicality and affordability, establishing a loyal fanbase in the market dominated by other large SUVs like the Toyota Land Cruiser and Nissan Patrol.

However, after nearly four decades on the market, Mitsubishi decided to discontinue the Pajero in 2021, citing declining sales, stricter emissions regulations, and the company's shift towards newer, electrified models.

The upcoming fifth-generation Pajero is expected to retain its core foundations, drawing inspiration from Mitsubishi's Triton pickup. Reports suggest that the new SUV may incorporate the Triton's twin-turbocharged 2.4-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, although Mitsubishi has not officially confirmed the powertrain details. Nonetheless, Mitsubishi has assured that the cabin and suspension systems of the new Pajero have been specifically engineered to ensure exceptional performance on challenging terrains while maintaining comfort during regular driving scenarios.

Additionally, the vehicle will be equipped with Mitsubishi's Super-All Wheel Control system, designed to enhance handling and stability across various driving conditions.

Despite these advancements, the new Pajero will also pay homage to the distinctive features that defined its predecessor. One such feature is the triple meter, prominently displayed on the dashboard of earlier models, which will make a comeback in the digital version of the new SUV. This updated digital display will showcase essential information such as altitude, outside temperature, compass navigation, pitch and roll angles, and the distribution of torque between the left and right wheels.

While the global launch of the Pajero has been announced, UAE residents may need to wait for further details concerning the vehicle's arrival in local showrooms, available specifications, and pricing.
