Mitsubishi Pajero to return with all-new model after five-year absence

The Mitsubishi Pajero is returning after a five-year hiatus, with the fifth generation SUV set to make its global debut on September 2. This marks the first time the iconic nameplate will be available since 2021. Although many details remain undisclosed, Mitsubishi has provided some glimpses into what buyers can anticipate from the renewed model.

The Pajero will once again feature elements that were previously exclusive to long-time owners, such as its classic triple meter display that shows altitude, temperature, compass information, and wheel torque distribution. As Mitsubishi's exclusive distributor in the UAE, Al Habtoor Motors has been approached for insight into the announcement, but has yet to comment.

Historically, the Mitsubishi Pajero, introduced in 1982, held a prominent place in the Japanese carmaker's lineup, selling over 3.25 million units worldwide. Renowned for its off-road prowess, it gained significant popularity in the UAE due to its practicality and affordability. The Pajero held its own against other large SUVs like the Toyota Land Cruiser and Nissan Patrol, despite the market being saturated with similar vehicles.

However, after four decades of production, the Pajero was discontinued in Japan in 2019, followed by other markets in 2021. The cessation was attributed to dwindling sales, stricter environmental regulations, and Mitsubishi's increased emphasis on newer, more technologically advanced models. The upcoming fifth-generation Pajero is anticipated to share its core architecture with Mitsubishi's Triton pickup.

It is also expected to utilize the Triton's twin-turbocharged 2.4-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, though Mitsubishi has not yet disclosed these specifics. The cabin and suspension systems of the new Pajero have been tailored to enhance its off-road capabilities while maintaining comfort during regular use. The vehicle will also incorporate Mitsubishi's proprietary Super-All Wheel Control system, which promises to enhance the SUV's handling and stability under various driving conditions.

Despite the numerous updates, certain traditional Pajero characteristics will persist. Among these is the triple meter, a prominent dashboard feature from earlier models that will now be presented digitally. This new display can show the vehicle's altitude, outside temperature, compass readings, as well as pitch and roll angles, and the distribution of torque between the front and rear wheels.

Although the global unveiling is confirmed, the specifics of the Pajero's arrival in the UAE remain uncertain. As of now, Mitsubishi has not disclosed when the new model will be available in UAE showrooms, the exact specifications that will be offered locally, or the pricing structure.
