Matlala declines to identify alleged payers to Sibiya as Madlanga commission hears about cash collections

Suspended police deputy commissioner Shadrack Sibiya appeared before the Madlanga Commission on Wednesday, where businessman Vusimuzi Matlala, an alleged corruption suspect, declined to name the individuals he claims paid money to Sibiya. Matlala testified that Sibiya received cash from people in Gauteng but refused to disclose their identities, stating that revealing the information could incriminate him.

He emphasized that this information was shared with him by a third party and that he did not want to implicate himself in any wrongdoing. Matlala also clarified his meeting with KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, asserting that he did not provide money to Sibiya but informed Mkhwanazi about payments allegedly made to the suspended deputy commissioner.

The commission's latest report recommended that Sibiya be investigated for corruption. Additionally, Sibiya and Mkhwanazi have been embroiled in a public dispute, with Mkhwanazi accusing Sibiya of having criminal links. Matlala's testimony also touched on his links to the late taxi boss Jotham Msibi and the late police Hawks head Maj-Gen Lestja Senona, who visited Msibi's farm prior to Msibi's wedding.
