Landtagswahl am 6. September: AfD, SPD und Grüne legen in Umfrage in Sachsen-Anhalt zu

Within days of the forthcoming Landtagswahl in Sachsen-Anhalt, the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has reportedly widened its lead over the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), according to a recent opinion survey by Infratest dimap commissioned by the ARD. The AfD now garners 42 percent of the vote, marking a one-point increase from July.

The CDU, led by Minister-President Sven Schulze, now holds 22 percent, down two points from the previous July poll. The Left Party follows with 11 percent (down 2), the SPD with 8 percent (up 1), and the Greens with 6 percent (up 1). The BSW and FDP, both struggling to clear the 5 percent threshold, garner 4 percent each. All other parties combined account for 4 percent.

The AfD alone cannot form a majority government; the CDU currently governs alongside the SPD and FDP. The Landtagswahl is scheduled for September 6. Infratest dimap questioned 1,511 eligible voters in Sachsen-Anhalt via phone and online on August 24 and 25. Around one in ten (11 percent) respondents may change their party allegiance before the election.

In such a scenario, the AfD would not achieve its goal of a sole government. A CDU-led minority government backed by the SPD and Greens might require support from the Left. The Union's supporters are divided on whether a CDU-led state government should receive support from the Left (47 percent each). Schulze is narrowly ahead in a direct vote, with 41 percent supporting him and 39 percent backing AfD candidate Ulrich Siegmund. Twenty percent responded with "don't know" or no answer.
