Kissi Agyebeng alleges coordinated efforts to weaken or abolish OSP

Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng has accused certain public officials of attempting to weaken or abolish the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) in Ghana. The opposition stems from the OSP's mandate to independently investigate corruption and decide which cases it should handle. Agyebeng admitted that the OSP has made mistakes, but emphasized that these errors do not justify calls for the institution's dismantling.

He questioned the appropriateness of using mistakes as grounds to abolish a public agency, arguing that if this were applied uniformly, nearly every government body in Ghana would be targeted for dissolution. Agyebeng explained that the OSP's internal review revealed that the sustained criticism was primarily directed at the institution's powers and authority, rather than the acknowledged mistakes.

He stated that some officials feel uncomfortable with the OSP's independence, particularly its role in determining who should be investigated and which corruption-related matters should be pursued. While he welcomed legitimate criticism, Agyebeng cautioned against using the institution's shortcomings to weaken its mandate or undermine its ability to combat corruption effectively.
