Gov Idris mourns ex-Supreme Court Justice, Umaru Kalgo

Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former Supreme Court Justice Umaru Atu Kalgo, who succumbed to death at the age of 89 on Monday night. The loss, according to the governor, affects Kebbi State, the legal fraternity and the nation at large.

In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yahaya Sarki, the governor conveyed his condolences to Kalgo's family, the residents of Kalgo Local Government Area and fellow members of the legal profession. He emphasized Kalgo's immense contributions to the administration of justice in Nigeria, noting that he served in various capacities, from High Court to the Supreme Court before retiring in 2007.

Governor Idris also pointed out Kalgo's significant role in law reform, highlighting that he was a part of the committee that prepared the 1990 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria. Furthermore, the governor revealed that Kalgo subsequently served as Chairman of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission, where he played a crucial part in shaping Nigeria's legal system.

The governor lauded Kalgo as a distinguished native of Kebbi State, whose career was defined by professionalism, integrity and unwavering dedication to public service. Kalgo received national accolades, among them the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) and Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR), along with the Kebbi State Merit Award.

The governor underscored that the legal profession and public service losses would remain a lasting part of Kalgo's legacy. "The demise of Justice Umaru Atu Kalgo is a painful blow to Kebbi State and Nigeria," said the governor. "We find solace in the knowledge that he lived a long and distinguished life committed to the service of humanity and the nation."
