GARID to build 10m-wide underground drain in Kaneshie from September 7

The Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project is set to build a 10-metre-wide underground stormwater drain in the Kaneshie area of Accra. The newly constructed drain will measure approximately 10 metres in width and will span a 1.5-kilometre distance from Pamprom Junction to First Light Junction along the Dr Busia Highway.

This initiative aims to enhance flood control and strengthen the drainage infrastructure in Ghana's capital, following the devastating floods of June 29. At least 39 people lost their lives and 91,989 were affected during those floods. Dr Kwadwo Ohene Sarfo, the GARID Project Coordinator, announced the commencement of construction on September 7, 2026, and mentioned that the new drain will replace two existing pipes, each with a diameter of about 1.2 metres, currently serving the enclave.

The new facility will connect to the recently completed section within the Accra Academy campus at one end and link to the existing drain at Pamprom Junction at the other. Due to the scale and location of the project, the construction will be conducted in three phases, resulting in temporary road closures and diversions along sections of the Dr Busia Highway.

Motorists and other road users are urged to avoid affected corridors during construction and utilize designated alternative routes instead.
