The Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project has announced temporary road closures and alternative routes starting September 7, 2026, as part of a major construction project along the Dr Busia Highway in the Kaneshie enclave. This will involve the creation of a 1.5 km double-cell rectangular drain, approximately 10 metres wide, replacing two existing pipes.
A comprehensive traffic management plan has been developed by the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources, the Department of Urban Roads, and other relevant institutions to ensure safe and efficient traffic flow during the construction.
The first phase of the closures will affect westbound carriageways from Pamprom Junction, with the closure lasting until the end of November 2026. Motorists will need to use alternative routes such as Awudome Cemetery Road, the New Times Corporation-Awudome Roundabout route, or the Okponglo-Mataheko route to reconnect to First Light Junction.
The Kaneshie Station-First Light section will remain closed until August 2027. In September 2027, the road linking First Light to the Cocoa Clinic Roundabout will also close, affecting traffic from the Russia community, Flamingo traffic lights, Kasoa, and Odorkor. Throughout the construction, motorists should use designated alternative routes and avoid the affected corridors unless necessary.
Advance notice of the closures will be provided through public communication channels, and the GARID Project has established dedicated toll-free telephone lines for inquiries and concerns.
