Doctors must lead fight against quackery, uphold ethics – NMA

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has called on doctors to lead the fight against quackery and unethical practices in the healthcare industry. NMA President, Prof Afekhide Omoti, emphasized this during the association's First Ordinary National Executive Council meeting of the new National Officers’ Committee for 2026, held in Abuja.

The meeting focused on "Transforming Healthcare Practice in Nigeria: Building Trust, Accountability and Collaborative Excellence" and aimed to address issues such as the quality and safety of healthcare delivery, unqualified practitioners, unethical conduct, poor regulation, workforce shortages, and declining public confidence in healthcare institutions.

Omoti stressed the importance of maintaining professional standards within the medical profession and highlighted that the fight against quackery must be a priority, but doctors must also uphold the highest ethical standards within their own practice. He emphasized that rebuilding public trust requires a combination of trust, accountability, professional excellence, and collaboration.
