Doctors must lead fight against quackery, uphold ethics – NMA

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has called upon doctors to lead the battle against quackery and unethical practices in the healthcare system, emphasizing the importance of upholding professional standards. At the association's inaugural National Executive Council meeting in Abuja, NMA President Prof Afekhide Omoti urged the medical community to prioritize the fight against quackery while also maintaining the highest ethical standards within their own profession.

The meeting, themed "Transforming Healthcare Practice in Nigeria: Building Trust, Accountability and Collaborative Excellence," addressed challenges such as unqualified practitioners, poor regulation, workforce shortages, and declining public confidence in healthcare institutions. According to Omoti, while external threats must be confronted, doctors must also examine their own conduct and professional standards.

The NMA President highlighted that rebuilding public trust required trust, accountability, professional excellence, and collaboration among healthcare professionals.
