Dharavi Redevelopment: 85 More Ganesh Nagar-Meghwadi Tenements Served Eviction Notices

Mumbai's Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP) has issued eviction notices to 85 more tenements in the Ganesh Nagar-Meghwadi area, marking the next phase of property clearance. These notices were served on August 21, giving residents just 10 days to vacate their homes. Of the 85 affected tenements, 17 have already agreed to leave, according to a DRP official.

The DRP aims to clear structures obstructing its vital redevelopment project, which is crucial for the public interest. The eviction process follows several notices and hearings by the Competent Authority under certain sections of the Maharashtra Slum Areas Act. Residents were given the chance to voice their concerns before the authority.

Despite multiple attempts to persuade occupants through dialogue and meetings, some have been non-compliant. As of now, 2634 families have signed rental agreements, while 1541 families have already vacated Sector-6. Those who vacate will receive rent offers: Rs 18,000 per month for ground-floor residents and Rs 15,000 for upper-floor residents. Commercial establishments can expect to pay Rs 175 per square foot per month.

The DRP has offered brokerage assistance, shifting charges, and an annual rent increase to support affected tenants. Non-compliant households will face eviction and demolition proceedings if they do not vacate by the deadline. The DRP is emphasizing voluntary and orderly relocation to ensure the Dharavi Redevelopment Project progresses without delays.
