DFAT turns to its ‘Mr Inside’ in Washington for advice on ‘Middle East crisis’

The United States is initiating the return of staff to several embassies in the Middle East, according to two sources familiar with the situation. The embassies in Lebanon, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Baghdad, Iraq, are among those seeing personnel reinstated, with family members also allowed to return to the US post in Riyadh. This development indicates Washington's assessment of a reduced risk of conflict with Iran, at least in the near term.

However, some embassies will initially operate below full capacity, with staff levels capped at no more than 85%. The State Department's spokesman stated that the department regularly reviews security conditions globally and adjusts staffing levels accordingly, prioritizing the safety of employees and their families while pursuing US foreign policy objectives.

The New York Times reported that the return of diplomats and the relaxation of emergency measures at US missions in the region might commence as early as this week, citing an internal document. Embassies in Jordan, Oman, Kuwait, and Qatar are also anticipated to increase personnel levels. U.S. embassies in Israel, Jordan, and Oman are projected to reach full staffing, while missions in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Lebanon will initially operate at reduced capacities of 85%, 75%, and 75%, respectively.

Staff reductions commenced in February when Washington allowed voluntary departures of non-emergency personnel and family members from Israel due to heightened tensions with Iran.
