US issues pause on visa appointments for applicants worldwide

The United States State Department has announced a temporary suspension of visa appointments for applicants across the globe as part of an ongoing immigration crackdown initiated by President Donald Trump's administration in its second term. The pause on visa services is being implemented to ensure that all applicants undergo comprehensive and consistent evaluations during the training period.

A State Department spokesperson revealed that the initiative involves a global training program to be conducted at all US embassies and consulates. The training aims to help consular officers identify applicants who may become dependent on US public benefits and to ensure a uniform evaluation process for visa applicants. However, the department has not provided specific details regarding the length or content of the training.

The administration's immigration crackdown, which includes the revocation of visas and green cards and the rejection of applications based on various reasons such as political opinions and protests against Israel's actions in Gaza, has faced legal challenges. A recent ruling by a US judge struck down a Trump administration policy suspending the issuance of immigrant visas to applicants from 75 countries, citing that the policy exceeded the statutory authority of Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The Financial Times reported that immigrant visa applicants with scheduled interviews at US embassies and consulates have been notified of rescheduled appointments, and they will receive further notice of new dates. Human rights groups have strongly criticized Trump's immigration policies, labeling them as discriminatory and in violation of free speech and due process rights.

They also argue that the crackdown has created an unsafe environment in the US, particularly for ethnic minorities who have expressed concerns about racial profiling.
