Conservationists celebrate ‘bounty of barn owl chicks’ in Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland residents can catch a partial lunar eclipse early Friday morning as the Moon enters Earth's shadow. At its peak, approximately 93% of the Moon's diameter will be obscured, nearly resembling a total eclipse. The most challenging aspect for observers will be the early start time, potential cloud cover, and the Moon's low position in the western sky.

The eclipse's first phase commences at 02:23 BST when the Moon enters Earth's lighter penumbral shadow. The more noticeable portion begins at 03:33 BST as Earth's darker umbral shadow begins to cross the lunar surface. Maximum eclipse occurs at 05:12 BST. In Belfast, the Moon will be situated low in the western sky at approximately nine degrees, with the eclipse concluding at 06:34. Dublin residents will witness a slightly higher positioning of the Moon, lasting until 06:38. In Enniskillen, moonset is forecasted for 06:41.

For a clear view, viewers must have an unobstructed line of sight toward the west, as buildings, hills, and trees could impede the view as the Moon dips closer to dawn. Unlike a solar eclipse, no protective eyewear is required to watch the lunar eclipse, as it is safe to observe directly with the naked eye. Binoculars or telescopes are not necessary, but they may enhance the visibility of the Moon's changing colors.

A clear sky will be essential, with western regions appearing more favorable due to clearer skies compared to central and eastern parts.
